Fodor's Expert Review Jam Rum Bar + Bistro Moderne
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
This tucked-away spot may not look like a restaurant from the outside, but inside it's a study in modern design, in whites, oranges, greens, and other bright colors. Though it's only a block from touristy Avenida Ashford, the crowd is mostly locals in on the delicious secret. The menu is Latin-inspired, and you'll find appetizers like plantain-encrusted calamari with a cilantro-anchovy dipping sauce. For the main course, try pan-charred halibut on a bed of black bean sauce or grilled filet mignon with a roasted poblano pepper and potato gratin. A rum bar showcases close to 70 rums from around the world and some creative rum-based cocktails. Surprisingly enough for a restaurant of this caliber, the place is extremely kid-friendly: there's a playroom if parents want to eat in peace, and kids eat half-price on Sunday. Children can even choose from a special "kidtini" menu of mixed juice drinks.
