Fodor's Expert Review Musée St-John Perse

Caribbean History Museum

Those with a strong interest in French literature and culture will want to visit the Musée St-John Perse, which is dedicated to the poet Alexis Léger, Guadeloupe's most famous son. Better known as Saint-John Perse, Léger was the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1960. Some of his finest poems are inspired by the history and landscape—particularly the sea—of his beloved Guadeloupe. This literary museum, in a restored colonial house, contains a collection of his poetry and some personal belongings. Before you go, look for his birthplace at 54 rue Achille René-Boisneuf.
