Guadeloupe

Guadeloupeans maintain that the beguine began here, and for sure, the beguine and mazurkas were heavily influenced by the European quadrille and orchestrated melodies. Their merging is the origin of West Indian music, and it gave birth to zouk (music with an African-influenced Caribbean rhythm) at the beginning of the 1980s. Still the rage here, it has spread not only to France but to other European countries. Many resorts have dinner dancing or offer regularly scheduled entertainment by steel bands and folkloric groups.

The atmospheric piano bar with its planters' chairs and whirring fan blades is as memorable as Rick's Café in Casablanca. The terrace tables give you the best views of the Caribbean through the multicolored bougainvillea. Accras (salt-fish fritters), peanuts, and olives usually arrive with your cocktail, which will be as tasty as it is pretty. A bar menu offers a selection of tapas, and the rum carte is extensive, some available by the flight. On Friday and Saturday evenings there's live piano music, and in high season, there's often more live music, like a jazz trio.

The small Casino de St-François has a contemporary élan that makes you want to dress up and come on out. There's a dramatic water installation, leather furniture, and an appealing restaurant, Le Joker, open for both lunch and dinner. It has a bar, a piano, and a stage for performers, which also doubles as a disco on Friday and Saturday. The casino opens every day at 10 am. The lighting, installed by Martinique's MPA architectural firm, makes it a handsome showplace, and there are more than 91 slots, as well as American roulette and gaming tables for baccarat, blackjack, craps, and more.

For the higher-stakes gambling at this casino, you'll have to change at least €100 into chips to be part of the action. However, the blackjack limit is €10. Slot machines open at 10 am and shut down at 4 am. The complex is showing serious signs of age, but locals love it and jam the parking lot on weekends. (It is in walking distance to most properties in the hotel zone.) Casino de Gosier has a bar and a well-priced buffet restaurant that is open from Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner. The bar can really crank up on Saturday nights or holidays, with sexy island girls in brief silver lamé costumes dispensing free champagne. Local bands sometimes add to the energy. You will need to bring your passport or you won't get past the checkpoint; the legal gambling age is 21.

Club Med sells night passes that include all cocktails, dinner with wine, and a show in the theater, followed by admission to the disco. Go on Friday for the gala dinner and the most creative show, or on a Tuesday, another special night. A night pass is a good option for single women, who will feel comfortable and safe at the disco, where there are plenty of fun staffers (G.O.s) willing to be dance partners.

The jazzed-up Eden Palm Theater for years was the stage for Cuban-influenced Caribbean musical reviews on Saturday nights. Now, though it still has a supper club ambience, it's just a fun DJ and dancing on Saturday nights following dinner service. Dinner is a multicourse, Franco-Caribbean affair and may include an alcoholic beverage. The wine carte encompasses bottles from around the world, with some fine bottles.

Something is always happening at La Créole Beach Hotel. The entertainment is often bands playing beguine and zouk, or piano with bass, all of which are very danceable and add to the hotel's conviviality. The tom-tom drummers accompanied by a bevy of native dancers are exciting. A steel band also plays, usually on Monday and Wednesday nights. The busy bar specializes in quality rums from various Caribbean islands, and serves creole tapas including traditional accras.

Le Cheyenne is a dramatic, Native American–theme disco that continues to draw the crowds. Look for the sculpture of a Cheyenne chief over the grand entrance. It's open every night and on weekends; there's a cover charge when the basement disco is open. With two separate sections, one caters to the young crowd—heavy on the techno—and the other is for the ageless. It has an attractive restaurant named Bora Bora that was originally designed for Pacific Rim cuisine. It has gone over to creole, with an emphasis on seafood, and serves from 8 pm until midnight, until 2 am on le weekend. Now it offers pizza, sandwiches, and salads—just enough fuel to keep the dance machines going! The Ed Hardy by Christian Audigier Boutique is open every night. Models—gals and guys—walk the runway wearing sexy swimwear and beach togs for the stellar fashion shows. The crowds are loving it!
