At Sauteurs (the French word for "jumpers" or "leapers") on the island's northernmost tip, Caribs' Leap (or Leapers Hill) is the 100-foot vertical cliff from which the last of the indigenous Carib Indians flung themselves into the sea in 1651. After losing several bloody battles with European colonists, they chose suicide over surrender to the French.
