  • 1. Gibbons Co.

One of Bermuda's oldest retailers has transformed itself into a contemporary department store with a wide range of men's, women's, and children's clothing. Brands include Calvin Klein, Mango, and DKNY, and there's a substantial lingerie selection, as well as Gap clothing and products, active and swimwear, accessories, and fashion jewelry. The perfume and cosmetics department stocks many French, Italian, English, and American lines at duty-free prices, including being the exclusive retailer for Guerlain. The housewares department stocks Denby tableware, which sells at a much lower price than in Canada or the United States. The shoe section stocks brands including Nine West, TOMS, and Anne Klein. Gibbons also owns and operates a separate store, in the nearby Washington Mall, that sells bed, bath, and home decor; M.A.C. Cosmetics on Front Street; and the perfume stores in Dockyard and Palm Lane in St. George's.

The beauty and home goods section of the former A.S. Cooper's department store remains but under a new name and ownership, and still sells a variety of beauty products and perfume, including Jo Malone, where you can also pick up one of the fragrant candles in coordinating scents. In the back find the extensive inventory of fine china and crystal from Waterford, Wedgewood, and Portmeirion. There's also jewelry and and tasteful Bermudian souvenirs. This is also the location to find a small selection of Picturesque Bermuda books and prints of the island from Roland Skinner.

  • 3. A. S. Cooper & Sons

Cooper's is best known for its extensive inventory of crystal and china, with pieces and sets by Waterford, Wedgwood, Villeroy & Boch, and Portmeirion, many sold at 15% to 20% less than U.S. prices. The store also carries tasteful Bermudian souvenirs, jewelry, fragrances, and cosmetics on the ground level. Brands on sale include Estée Lauder, Clinique, Clarins, Bobbi Brown, Lancôme, and Elizabeth Arden. The main store also carries its private-label clothing collection for women and a ladies' sportswear department, which carries Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, DKNY Jeans, Jones New York, and Nic and Zoe. There are several branches, including one at the Fairmont Southampton Resort and in Dockyard. Cooper's also owns Astwood Dickinson jewelry stores and the Bermuda outpost of Vineyard Vines, which carries specially branded items only found in the Bermuda store.

  • 4. A. S. Cooper Man

The menswear division of the classy department store is first-rate, with staff who are reserved and courteous but very helpful when needed. It is full of men's casual and dress clothes, plus accessories such as belts and wallets. The store is the exclusive Bermuda supplier of Polo Ralph Lauren. • 5. Brown & Co.

Although there are several standout sections in this sprawling store, including a perfume department, home decor, and a fun assortment of upscale Bermuda-inspired gifts and trinkets, it's also the location of the Body Shop and sells a large range of its natural and ethically produced products. Look for the deliciously scented body butters and the popular gift sets.

  • 6. Marks & Spencer

A franchise of the large British chain, Marks and Sparks (as it's called by everyone in Bermuda and England) is usually filled with locals attracted by its moderate prices for men's, women's, and children's clothing. Summer wear, including swimsuits, cotton jerseys, and polo shirts, is a good buy—but don't forget everything is in U.K. sizes rather than U.S. The chain's signature line of food and treats, plus wine from all over the world, is tucked away at the back of the store.
