Fodor's Expert Review Serendipity Guest Apartments
6 Rural Dr., Paget, PG 06, Bermuda See on Map
You'd never stumble across these two studio apartments in residential Paget unless you were looking, but it's a lovely spot for budget travelers. The owner's family has been on the island since 1612, and welcomes return guests as part of that extended family. The real genius of this place, however, is the value and location. The home is next to the Railway Trail, across the street from the Paget Nature Reserve, and about ten minutes from downtown Front Street.
YOU SHOULD KNOW While the property is centrally located, it's not within easy walking distance of either Hamilton or the beaches on South Shore.
room
Both ground-floor apartments are clean and spacious, if decorated on the older, homier side. Fully-equipped kitchenettes and private garden-view patios make up for the rather basic furnishings and lack of amenities.
bathroom
Nothing spectacular, but perfectly sufficient and on par with the price.
lobby
There's no lobby, but the surrounding property is covered with lush greenery, vibrant flowering bushes, and poinciana trees.
pool
With only two guest units, you'll often have the modest pool, deck, and lounge chairs all to yourself.
dining
Since there isn't a restaurant on-site, you'll have to fend for yourself when it comes to food.
Stock your kitchenette and you won't need to worry about eating out; the closest grocery store is less than ten minutes away by foot.
drinking
Unless you're craving a milkshake from Ice Queen, located down the hill, you'll need to taxi to Elbow Beach or venture into Hamilton when you want a drink.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Buses run continuously along South Shore Road, making eastbound and westbound stops just before the shopping plaza at the bottom of the hill. Otherwise you can connect with Hamilton by ferry from the Lower Ferry wharf about a 4-minute drive or 15-minute walk from the property. Taxis are also readily available if you call in advance.
Restaurants
With no typical American fast food on the island--save for a lone KFC--Bermudians have to go to Ice Queen (1-minute walk) for a "lunchtime grease" or late-night take-out. On the other end of the spectrum is Cafe Lido (4-minute drive). Overlooking the white sand and turquoise waters of Elbow Beach, this restaurant offers romantic ambiance and outstanding seafood.
WHY WE LIKE IT
These affordable studio apartments make it feel like you are really staying in Bermuda. Perfectly situated in a residential area between Hamilton and the South Shore beaches, it's a great spot to call home as you explore the island. So long as you're aware that rooms and amenities are on the older side, this property's privacy, value, and convenience cannot be overstated.
