Rum in Bermuda

One of the distinct pleasures of a visit to Bermuda is getting to sample a bit of island rum and rum-based products. Gosling's Black Seal Rum is perhaps the best-loved by locals. It's darker and thicker than the usual stuff, with a hint of caramel flavor—especially when mixed with carbonated ginger beer to make a Dark ’n' Stormy, a famous Bermuda drink (treat it with respect and caution).

Gosling's is one of Bermuda's oldest companies, and its Hamilton liquor shop was established in 1806. Gosling's Black Seal Rum was sold in barrels until just after World War I, and inherited its name from the black sealing wax that sealed the barrel corks. In its 151-proof variety, Black Seal will test the strongest drinker. Many prefer to buy it in the standard 80 proof.

Bermuda's rum swizzle, another popular drink, uses the ubiquitous Black Seal Rum. Many people hold their recipes close to the chest, but standard swizzles have a mix of fruit juices, grenadine, and Angostura bitters. Gosling's also produces three liqueurs that are big favorites—Bermuda Gold, Bermuda Banana Liqueur, and Bermuda Coconut Rum. These liqueurs can be ordered everywhere, from poolside bars to late-night jazz clubs. They're even found in cakes, as you soon discover in gift shops and on restaurant menus. Classic Bermuda rum cakes are another delicious way to taste the island's famous export.
