Fodor's Expert Review Little Good Harbour

Low-key, casual, and out of the way, this cluster of self-catering cottages on the island’s northwest coast, just beyond the fishing community of Six Men’s Bay, is ideal for families, couples, small groups…anyone who doesn’t need all the trappings of a full-service resort. Yet Little Good Harbour does offer a couple of pools, a small beach, a spa, and an excellent restaurant—and will arrange anything else you need or want. Most of all, the cottages themselves are lovely, spacious, comfortable…even luxurious in a “tropical island” sense.

Garden cottages have one, two, or three en suite bedrooms, fully-equipped kitchen, separate living room, and all the comforts of home. Most are split-level: a bedroom and bath are upstairs; the living room, kitchen, and second and third bedrooms are downstairs. All rooms combine antique or antique-style furniture with a light, tropical motif. Each has a breezy terrace or garden patio. The three-bedroom “Vineyard Suite” cottage has separate living and dining rooms and a huge open-plan kitchen with a breakfast

Two huge oceanfront suites share the historic fort building, across the street from the cottages, with the restaurant. The suites have walls of natural stone, louvered windows that open to the view, an outdoor terrace, living room, kitchen, two or three bedrooms, and “tropical chic” décor.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Only bedrooms have air-conditioning.

As each suite is different in size and shape, each bathroom is, too. All are ample size, however, and have beautifully tiled walls and floors, large glass-front showers, and antique vanities with stone surfaces and one or two large basins. The “Vineyard” suite has all that plus a claw-foot tub in the master bath.

There is no lobby—only a small front office.

There are two pools. The smaller pool, tucked away in a quiet courtyard, is good for a quick dip; the larger pool is in the garden at the rear of the property, adjacent to the spa.

At The Little Spa, tucked away in a poolside garden, guests can choose from an array of treatments and therapies, ranging from a 30-minute facial or head massage to a full-day package that includes a lemon/rosemary body scrub, steam shower, full-body Swedish massage, deep-cleansing facial, and mani/pedi…and everything in between.

If you choose the full-day package, The Fishpot Restaurant will deliver your lunch to the spa or poolside.

All accommodations have large, kitchens equipped with a large fridge, stove, oven, microwave, and toaster, as well as crockery, cutlery, and glassware. Prior to your arrival, if you wish, the hotel will stock the kitchen with essential groceries—breakfast items, soft drinks, and a 6-pack of Banks beer—or other items according to your preferences.

The Fish Pot, the hotel's own restaurant just across the road, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner—fresh seafood, of course—overlooking the water. Much more appealing than its name implies, The Fish Pot is one of the most popular dining spots on the west coast.

Hotel guests can request a personal chef from the restaurant to prepare a private meal in their own cottage.

The Fish Pot has a bar, primarily for diners, but you can certainly enjoy cocktails on your own terrace or patio or join together with guests in neighboring cottages.

A small white-sand beach, adjacent to The Fish Pot Restaurant, has cushioned sun loungers and beach towels available to hotel guests.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The beach is tiny and across the busy road from the cottages. Mullins Beach, a mile or so south of Speightstown, is a larger and very popular beach with food and drinks available.

Getting Around

A rental car is recommended, as the hotel is in the far northwestern tip of the island. Using taxis, which are always available, can be costly. Some restaurants in Speightstown offer round-trip transportation to diners (with a minimum spend). On request and at an additional cost, the hotel will provide airport transfers.

Captain Dwayne’s private water taxi service, which departs from the dock at Little Good Harbor, takes passengers (for a fee) to locations along the west coast or on coastal cruises, turtle watches, and snorkel trips.

On the beachfront in Speightstown, The Lobster Pot (5-minute drive) serves lobster in many styles, along with Caribbean specialties. Nearby, Juma’s Restaurant (5-minute drive) specializes in French and Thai cuisine—with a Caribbean flair. Both serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and host a Sunday afternoon beach BBQ with live music. Kids are always welcome.

Also in Speightstown, near the fish market, Fisherman’s Pub (5-minute drive)—a former rum shop and now a waterfront bar and restaurant—serves an authentic, inexpensive, Bajan buffet lunch.

Lime (relax, chat, chill) with the locals. Sip some Mount Gay Rum or hoist a Banks beer on the waterfront deck of Fisherman’s Pub (5-minute drive) in Speightstown. The patrons may be fishermen and will start early; you can hang around all afternoon if you wish.

In Holetown, have a sophisticated evening at Drift Ocean Terrace Lounge (20-minute drive) or a more lively night at Red Door Lounge or Duke’s Night Lounge (20-minute drive).

The cottages at Little Good Harbour are roomy, comfortable, and beautifully furnished—the way you might like your own island cottage, if you had one.
