Fodor's Expert Review Barbados Beach Club

Maxwell Coast Rd., Maxwell, Christ Church, Barbados See on Map

Designed with families in mind, this four-story hotel (with elevators) sits on a beautiful stretch of south-coast beach—and offers tremendous value. For the price of your room, you can enjoy activities ranging from beach volleyball or miniature golf to nature walks. If you like real golf, special packages are offered in conjunction with the nearby Barbados Golf Club.

The size and number of beds—two doubles, one or two queens, or one king—distinguish most of the rooms here, as the décor is similar throughout. Each room has a mini-fridge and a private balcony. Penthouse suites, high on the 7th floor of the hotel, have a sitting area with a sofa bed, a kitchen, and a private balcony with an ocean view in three directions. All rooms have a TV but only basic cable channels are available.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms are simply decorated and kept clean but really need refreshing.

Bathrooms are all quite small and old-fashioned, with a toilet, shower/tub combo, and counter with a single sink.

Rather nondescript, the lobby is a large space, separated into alcoves, with a reception counter, several rattan armchairs and coffee tables, a computer for guest use, an elevator, and a stairway.

The hotel has a large free-form pool, with one section especially for kids. There are plenty of loungers around the pool.

A small room on the first floor has weights, a bench, and a stationary bike.

Meals served in the Poolside Restaurant & Bar—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are leisurely and informal and mostly served buffet-style. The menu varies daily but, overall, is rather uninspired. Reef View Restaurant, a more formal dining experience, specializes in seafood—but it’s open only three nights per week. Meals are offered at set times, not all day. The hotel has live entertainment three-to-five nights per week, depending on the season.

The poolside bar serves drinks during the day.

The beach right in front of the hotel is rather small, but you can walk for a good distance in either direction and the beach gets much wider in several areas. The sand is beautifully white and soft; most days, the ocean is calm and swimming is perfectly safe. Non-motorized water sports are complimentary, so grab a boogie board or kayak and hit the water!

Getting Around

The local bus service is reliable, and the closest bus stop is a five-minute walk from the hotel. A complimentary shuttle to Bridgetown is available Monday through Saturday, and it's a five-minute stroll to either St. Lawrence Gap or Oistins. Taxi fare to the Gap is about $10; to the airport, about $20.

As the hotel is all-inclusive, you may not want to eat elsewhere. For a change of pace, however, St. Lawrence Gap has a number of restaurants; the Gap is a short walk from the hotel, but it’s better to take a taxi after dark. Try Café Sol (5-minute drive), for example, for Tex-Mex (or Gringo) cuisine and extraordinary margaritas.

Definitely take in the Oistins Fish Fry (5-minute drive), a must-do event on Friday evenings. All along the waterfront, local folks grill fresh fish (and chicken for landlubbers), served with traditional Bajan sides. Seating is at communal picnic tables, servings are huge, prices are low, and music adds to the fun—a good time for the whole family.

St. Lawrence Gap also has a lot of nighttime activity. Try The Old Jamm Inn or Scoopie's Jazz (5-minute drive) for drinks, music, dancing, and a convivial crowd.

"The Club" is a small all-inclusive, where your room, meals, drinks, activities, and entertainment are all included. While the place could definitely use some TLC, the price is hard to beat.
