Fodor's Expert Review Charlie's Restaurant & Bar
For almost 75 years of San Nicolas's boom-and-bust oil refinery days, Charlie's Bar has been the town's heart and soul, and it still serves as a magnet for visitors and locals today—it's even run by a third-generation Charlie. Its famous interior—a mini-museum of eclectic items left behind by years of visitors—is only half the attraction; Charlie's serves surprisingly good food for a watering-hole dive. Superb fresh fish and killer steaks have folks trekking out on a regular basis. Charlie's also bottles and sells their own hot Honeymoon Sauce. Lunch or an early dinner are the only options since they close at 7 pm, except for Thursday nights when San Nicolas celebrates their weekly Carubbian Festival, a mini-carnival in the streets—a perfect opportunity to taste Charlie's signature "Boozer Coladas."
