  • 1. Jacqui O's BeachHouse at Love Beach

    $$$$

This Saint-Tropez inspired beachfront haven, where white floorboards seamlessly integrate with the alabaster sands of Love Beach, is also where restaurateur Lance Leonhardt, dubbed Lancelot the Lionheart, holds court. The gregarious host is as much a part of the atmosphere as the seashell chandeliers and DJ booth, which he also mans when he's not serving up exquisitely plated and crafted delights including perfectly seared blackened scallop risotto and a twist on gazpacho adding sweet black pineapple. The mix of yachties, foodies, and the who’s who come for the superb service and excellent wine pairings selected by Lance and served in chilled glasses. Every evening at 6:15 pm the restaurant stands still as Pavarotti’s “Miserere” welcomes the sunset.

  • 2. La Bussola

    $$$

La Bussola means compass in Italian and your pursuit of fine Italian cuisine will lead you to the Tagliaventi brothers and their genial staff. Dine on authentic Italian thin-crust pizza on the spacious verandahs to the hum of the Atlantic or enjoy creamy lobster bisque (when in season), crispy calamari, or grilled rack of lamb in the nautical-themed dining room. The bar is stocked with more than 300 international spirits and liqueurs and an extensive, but reasonably priced, wine list. Though the massive wrap-around balcony is the ideal spot to dine, be sure to douse yourself with repellent before you arrive—the mosquitoes are quite aggressive.

  • 3. Sheer Rocks

    $$$

Comprising a series of tiered wood decks carved into the cliffside, this popular spot offers views that are every bit as sought after as the food. The menu encompasses a tapestry of creative tapas, many of which can be served in larger portions, like umami-braised beef short ribs and truffle mac-and-cheese infused with porcini stock. Add a dash of sultry music, season with smashing views, complement with an admirable wine list (not to mention inventive cocktails), and you have the recipe for a tropical St. Tropez experience. Even with its finite space, Sheer Rocks has continued to expand—the Rock Terrace tier is primarily for tasting-menu dining, and a private lounge area has a tiny infinity pool and is fabulous for small gatherings.

Big Banana has modern rustic decor befitting its past as an 18th-century rum house, and it's fortunately retained its former charm and distinction as one of the most popular casual dining eateries on island. The menu includes pizza, burgers, wraps, and scrumptious down-home local food—try the catch of the day, which, when paired with flavorsome fruit crushes (the coconut is divine), is a great way to end a day of window-shopping in the quays.

Crossing the intricate Indonesian carved wood vestibule, you are transported to the far east with a menu that features Japanese, Balinese, Thai, and Indonesian cuisine that ferries guests on a journey through the delicate, complex flavors of the East. The luxurious dark wood furniture, flooring, and dim lighting juxtaposed against bright fuchsia chair covers, crisp white serving trays, chartreuse candleholders, and airy potted bamboo make for a romantic setting. Stopover in Vietnam sampling the Hanoi Vegetable Rolls; venture to Japan indulging in the yuzu tomato salad, land in Thailand with spicy beef rice. • 6. Le Bistro

    $$$$

This Antiguan institution has in recent years renovated with modern Mediterranean-ish digs, including cerulean blue and lime green walls and a stylish lounge area and bar. It's an inviting space for supping on classic regional fare with indigenous ingredients; order one of the daily specials—smoked marlin carpaccio with pink peppercorns, or prawns in a gossamer ginger white wine sauce laced with leeks—when possible. The fine wine list hits all the right spots, geographically and varietally, without outrageous markups. Co-owner Philippa Esposito doubles as hostess and pastry chef; her passion-fruit mousse and chocolate confections are sublime.

  • 7. Papa Zouk

    $$$

According to owner Bert Kirchner, Papa Zouk is not a restaurant, but a rum shop surreptitiously disguised as a favorite seafood joint—don’t miss the pan-fried snapper and garlicky gumbo (bouillabaisse). Located off the beaten path, the deliberately kitschy decor—madras tablecloths and lobster traps turned chandeliers—draws a hodgepodge of characters from locals to English Harbour yachties, actor Robert De Niro, and the man who notoriously set the bar ablaze. Showcasing more than 100 rums, the bar includes rums from Japan, Papua New Guinea, and, of course, Antigua.

Hilda Davis Dr., Antigua and Barbuda

  • 8. Pillars Restaurant & Bar

    $$$$

“Location, location, location” is the real draw of this spot within Nelson’s Dockyard, which is seamlessly integrated into the waterfront promenade with amazing views of the harbor and its namesake, the Boat House Pillars. Open for all meals—lunch is seldom crowded—a varied (and pricey) menu includes items like Thai shrimp cakes and a Mediterranean eggplant caprese sandwich.

  • 9. Salt Plage

    $$$

Sandwiched between Siboney Beach Club and the great blue sea, under a bamboo-accented natural-wood thatched roof grounded by multicolored stone floors, this little gem has an efficient and welcoming staff that's doting without being suffocating. The fare is simple and deftly prepared, including perfectly chewy New York–style bagels with lox in the morning, and sweet potato and butternut sauté served with coconut bouillon and crispy papadam. The food won't disappoint, but for some the prices may. The decor is muted, with monochromatic blue intonations, melding with the paradisiac views of Dickenson Bay beach and outfitted with seemingly obligatory trendy bamboo hanging lanterns. People- and panorama-viewing is the order of the day by the often crowded beach, but somehow the hustle and bustle is unobtrusive.

Marina Bay Rd., Antigua and Barbuda
    268-462–0806

    Known For

    • Cabanas and beach loungers available for rent
    • On the beach
    • Simple, imaginative menu
  • 10. The Bay @ Nonsuch

    $$$$

Edged high atop a precipice, this open-air restaurant with tiered wooden terraces and billowing curtains hugs an infinity pool and boasts magnificent views of the bay. The cornerstone is the simple, varied menu that deftly marries local ingredients and international techniques created by Chef Mitchell Husbands. Decision fatigue is relieved by the table d'hôte dinner menu (rotating biweekly), but none of the flare is lost with impeccable plating. The fresh caprese salad with balsamic reduction whets the appetite; follow it with the flawlessly grilled wahoo and creole lentils entrée. Filet mignon and lobster carry a surcharge for guests of the hotel and breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style. Wine and mixed drinks are included in the (pricey) pre-fixe charge for visitors.

The wide-ranging prix-fixe menu (an appetizer and main will set you back about EC$100) has delectable bits, including a rich and spicy seafood chowder, sizable serving of crispy calamari, and creamy seafood pasta. This cramped, but cozy, eatery decorated with painted hibiscus flowers is a haunt for yachties and locals alike.
