Fodor's Expert Review Blue Lagoon Resort
Foeata Island, Vava'u, Tonga Islands
This remote eco-lodge, a 35-minute boat trip from Neiafu, is the only resort on the island and some of its eight large, self-contained villas (fales) are on sturdy stilts over the beach or water, with ladders into the water from their terrace. Others are on land, and all are clean and well-kept, with large terraces and outdoor showers with views over the lagoon. The big draw on this island besides snorkeling, diving, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, and sailing is the chance to swim with the local humpback whales. Make sure you book ahead for whale watching excursions.
PROS
- laid-back unpretentious atmosphere
- excellent dining
- close to nature, including whales
CONS
- huts above the water are not for everyone
