Etiquette

Shaking hands has become the normal greeting, but the clasping of hands is also widespread, as is grasping of the waist. Personal space is not seen as an issue, and crowding is regarded as normal. Public displays of affection are seen as crude: handholding between friends of the same sex is ok, but not between friends of the opposite sex. Women may not be treated with the same respect they are used to at home, and should avoid traveling alone. Modest dress is appropriate for everyone. PNG runs on "Melanesian time," meaning punctuality is not considered important.
