Fishing

You won't lack for places to land some whopping brown trout in this region. Fishing season here runs from October to April. Fly-fishing excursions to local rivers and remote backcountry areas, for example Kahurangi National Park, involve hiking or helicopter trips and give plenty of excitement to visiting anglers. Daily guiding rates are generally around NZ$850 and include lunches, drinks, and 4WD transportation. (Helicopter access is additional.) Best areas to base yourself for trout fishing are: St. Arnaud, Motueka, Murchison, or at one of the dedicated though pricey fly-fishing lodges in country areas, close to these towns.

Strike Adventure Fishing. Zane Mirfin is a very experienced fly-fishing guide, with huge local knowledge. His company takes clients to the best spots throughout Nelson and Marlborough, as well as the West Coast and North Canterbury (He'll also take you sea fishing, if that's your preference.) 03/541–0020; www.strikeadventure.com.
