Fodor's Expert Review Hotel d'Urville
52 Queen St., Blenheim, Marlborough, 7240, New Zealand
Every room is unique in the well-preserved, art deco–style Old Public Trust Building, but all are stylish and enjoy a friendly, intimate atmosphere. You could choose the Raja Room, with its Eastern-inspired decorations and carved Javanese daybed; the romantic Angel Room; or the sensory trip of the Colours Room. One room is based on the exploits of Dumont d'Urville, who made voyages to the Pacific and the Antarctic in the 1820s and '30s. The excellent Brasserie Restaurant is classic French. It's open daily, for lunch and dinner.
PROS
- fabulous old building right on the main street
- the downstairs bar is a welcoming spot for an evening cocktail
- affordable boutique stay
CONS
- downstairs accommodation is very close to busy street
- some rooms and bathrooms are quite small
