Dolphin- and Seal-Watching

Dolphin and Seal Encounters. For closer aqueous encounters of the mammalian kind, local boating/diving/fishing experts, Diveworks, will take you on a four-hour cruise from Whakatane Wharf. First you'll check out the dolphins (there's a 97% success rate of finding them), then you'll head to Whale Island where the seals will be waiting. They will often jump off the rocks and swim out to meet the boat. Wet suits and snorkels for swimming with the dolphins and seals are provided, or you can just watch. From November though March, cruises leave daily at 8 am; other times of the year times depend on weather and demand. 96 The Strand, Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, 3120. 0800/354–7737; 07/308–2001; www.diveworks-charters.com.
