Fodor's Expert Review Paparoa Marae
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The whānau (family) of Paparoa Marae provides a marae (meeting house) experience that is down-to-earth. It's a working marae so, along with a traditional welcome and cultural performance, Māori elders explain the marae, Māori carvings, and other aspects of Māori history, culture, and protocol. You're invited to share in a hāngi (the traditional method of Māori cooking) meal. A marae visit costs around $35–$75, including the hāngi. It's about 20 minutes out of Tauranga, just off State Highway 2 in the village of Te Puna.
