Fodor's Expert Review The Refinery

$ Waihi to Paeroa Café
Hidden down a side street (look for the sign on the main street), is this gourmet home-cooking surprise. This excellent coffee shop and café serves breakfasts, home-baked muffins, scones, cakes and shortcakes, build-your-own bagels, and counter "sammies" crammed with choices of grilled meats, haloumi (salty cheese of goat and sheep's milk), and vegetables (the corned beef on rye Reuben is a signature). Most ingredients are free range, organically grown. The setting is a heritage building originally a bank gold refinery, built during the height of this district’s gold-mining days. Open 9:30 to 3:30, Wednesday to Sunday. The Refinery also encompasses a boutique one-bedroom accommodation, the Refinery Guard’s Cottage, NZ$140/night.
