Fodor's Expert Review Puka Park Resort Grand Mecure
Mount Ave., Pauanui, Waikato, 3546, New Zealand
This hillside hideaway, managed by the international Accor hotel chain, nestles in native bushland on Pauanui Beach, at the seaward end of Tairua Harbor. Timber chalets are furnished with a designer's flair. Sliding glass doors lead to a balcony perched among the treetops. The Miha Restaurant and bar describes its menu as "Pacific Rim with a modern European twist," covering all bases; the elegant interior or casual alfresco spaces are a delight. If you tire of the adjacent beach, guest facilities include a swimming pool and hot tub, gym, and tennis court, plus they have bikes to hire and there's an international 18-hole golf course down the road. The turnoff to Pauanui from State Highway 25 is about 6 km (4 miles) south of Tairua.
