Bird-Watching

In New Zealand, you will encounter birds you’ve never seen before, and most of the country’s exotic bird species reside on Stewart Island. If you brush up on your whistling, you might find yourself a feathered friend following you along a Rakiura trail.

Recommended Outfitters

Aurora Charters. Full- or half-day pelagic bird-watching tours are offered aboard the Aurora, a comfortable 58-foot catamaran on which to get your fix of seabirds. It's not uncommon to see five species of albatross during these trips, as well as penguins, petrels, terns, shearwaters, and more. The large open deck out back provides an excellent platform for spotting the birds (bring your binoculars but most of the birds get pretty close), and if the wind picks up the cabin can comfortably seat 20 to swig a hot drink. Advance booking is strongly recommended. The full-day trip usually goes to Port Pegasus, a rarely seen part of southern Stewart Island. These tours are not suitable for children. Fishing charters for large groups are available, too. 03/219–1126; www.auroracharters.co.nz. From NZ$100.

Bravo Adventure Cruises. Phillip Smith takes you on an evening cruise and guided bushwalk to spot kiwis as they forage on the beach. Phillip is extremely knowledgeable about island lore and local Māori history. The trip is limited to 15 people—you should have a reasonable level of fitness. Advance bookings are a must, but the trip may be canceled if the weather seems dodgy. Stewart Island, Southland, 9846. 03/219–1144; www.kiwispotting.co.nz/. NZ$140.

Ulva's Guided Walks. Let Ulva Goodwillie and her team of guides share their knowledge of flora, fauna, avian, and wildlife expertise with you on a three- to four-hour amble through this ancient podocarp forest. An open sanctuary since 1997, this predator-free refuge allows rare and endangered birds and plants to thrive. Ulva's guiding team all live and work on Stewart Island, and this becomes immediately apparent as they share their passion and enthusiasm for Ulva Island with you. Advanced booking is essential. Keen birders opt for the Birding Bonanza, a full-day wildlife trifecta of land birds, seabirds, and kiwi. The Fernery, 20 Main Rd., Stewart Island, Southland, 9846. 03/219–1216; www.ulva.co.nz. From NZ$125.
