Fodor's Expert Review Spellbound and Te Ana o te Atua Caves

This tour offers two different underground experiences as well as an opportunity to see glowworms close up and learn about their amazing life cycle. The short but scenic above-ground walk is an added bonus. At Spellbound, a raft gently floats through a glowworm chamber that was filmed by Sir David Attenborough for the BBC. At Te Ana o te Atua (Cave of the Spirit), which has been known to the Ngati Kinohaku people for centuries, you proceed on foot through a chamber that features limestone formations, fossils, and bones. The combo includes tea or coffee and is limited to 12 people. Tours (3½-hours, advance booking advised) leave from the general store in the middle of Waitomo Village.
