Len Lye—a native-born artist famous for his experimental films and kinetic sculpture—believed “great architecture goes 50/50 with great art,” and the twisted towers of glass and steel housing his work bear that out. Inside the drama continues with changing exhibitions of Lye’s thought-provoking pieces. Designed by New Zealand architect Andrew Patterson, who used traditional Māori aesthetics to convey the essence of the artist, the stunning venue opened in 2015. It adjoins the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and is the only museum in the country devoted to a single artist.
