Fodor's Expert Review HUHU Cafe
Locals smile quietly when visitors inevitably express surprise that such an urban-chic café exists "way out here in the country." (The moniker "café" doesn't do HUHU justice.) Chef-owner Andy showcases local food, and his Te Kuiti slow-cooked lamb shoulder has won national acclaim. The same contemporary New Zealand–style menu runs from lunch through dinner, with a mix of smaller and larger plates that (mostly) stay under NZ$30. Traditional rewana (Māori bread) is usually featured, and top New Zealand wines plus craft beers from throughout the North Island are available. Big windows with great views encourage diners to linger, but leave time to check out the classy New Zealand giftware, ceramics, and jewelry downstairs in the HUHU Gallery.
