Fodor's Expert Review Galbraith's Ale House
Brew lovers and Brits craving a taste of home head straight for Keith Galbraith's alehouse, which occupies the former Grafton Library, with its neo-Palladian facade. It hosts a big crowd that comes before and after rugby matches at nearby Eden Park, and it's also popular with academics who come to discuss the New Zealand political scene on Friday night. The English-style ales are made on the premises and served at proper cellar temperature. Keith learned the art of brewing in the United Kingdom and sticks religiously to the style. Order a pint and dig into bangers and mash (seriously good sausages made by a local butcher with meat marinated in the Grafton Porter ale atop creamy mashed potatoes). The food is well priced and tasty. People also come for the smoked fish platter—a selection of fish and seafood smoked at the Coromandel smokehouse. There's also a reasonable selection of whiskey.
