Fodor's Expert Review Dida's Wine Lounge & Tapas

$$$ Ponsonby Spanish

In 1941 a grocer's shop stood on this site, run by a Croatian, Joseph Jakicevich, who also made his own wine. Today, three generations on, his descendants run this lively wine-and-tapas bar in the same building, alongside one of the wineshops in their Glengarry chain. A photo of Dida, Croatian for "grandfather," hangs on the wall in the company of many family photos, and it is likely you'll be served by one of his great grandchildren. More than 100 wines are offered by the glass to accompany a menu of around 18 tapas—Spanish with a Kiwi twist—which vary depending on the season. There might be risotto balls with a kiwifruit relish or chicken wings with smoked spiced almonds. Breakfast is served, too. Locals love this place, so you may need to arrive early to get a table inside or out especially on a Thursday or Friday night.
