Fodor's Expert Review Kia Ora Sauvage

Motu Avea Rahi, Tuamotu-Gambier Islands, French Polynesia

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

In French, Sauvage means savage, but the experience on this private island will be gloriously serene. The five-bungalow resort, little sister to Hotel Kia Ora, is 35 km (22 mi) away across the lagoon. There's a two-night minimum stay, but the peaceful experience uninterrupted by phones and TV may have you lingering longer. Rooms are rustic with double beds swathed in mosquito netting, tree branch pillars, and tables fashioned from tree trucks. Oil lamps illuminate the restaurant and bungalows at night, but the generator keeps the water hot in the bathrooms.
