Packing

The French Polynesian islands are a casual destination where most time is spent out-of-doors, so function trumps fashion—there's no need to dress to impress, but looking tidy is always appreciated by your island hosts. Comfortable and loose-fitting clothes, sundresses, and bright colors fit in anywhere. Bring what you need to stay covered from the intense tropical sun (brimmed hats, sunscreen, sarongs, and loose, long-sleeved shirts are essential), as well as items you'll need to play in the ocean (your own snorkel and fins, sturdy reef shoes, and a few swimsuits). Mosquito repellent, a raincoat, and a first-aid kit are essential.

Although most essentials are readily available at the larger resorts or city centers, you pay a premium for anything that isn't grown on the island, so it's best pack a plentiful supply.
