There is a network of ferries in French Polynesia that allows for the transport of locals and merchandise between islands. Interisland boat travel varies widely, from the speedy daily transfers between Tahiti and Moorea, to the twice-weekly transfers from Tahiti to Huahine, to the small cargo vessels know as goelettes, which take passengers along with their main freight transport. If you go even farther out to the Gambier archipelago, there are boats that, every three weeks or so, travel a 15-day circuit around the more remote atolls. Make sure you know what you're getting: boat transport can be anything from luxury travel to unrolling a sleeping bag on the deck and providing your own meals, especially on freight transport. Ask questions, and be prepared. If you're short on time, flying is the better option.

The two main ferries traveling from Tahiti to outlying islands are the Moorea Express and the Aremiti. For information on boat travel between other French Polynesian islands, the best option is to ask your accommodation or visit the port in person for prices and timetables.

The cargo passenger ships Hawaiki Nui and the Vaeanu run inter-island "cruises" as part of their delivery run, and call at Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, and Bora Bora. The Hawaiki Nui takes 12 passengers accommodated in cabins and on deck (two voyages a week); the Vaeanu takes 90 passengers with 58 on deck and 32 in cabins (three voyages a week). These cargo/passenger boats are for those who don't mind roughing it. There are restaurants on board.
