Driving around the Northern Territory is relatively easy, with mostly good paved roads and light traffic outside Darwin. But distances can be daunting. For example, Adelaide to Alice Springs via the Stuart Highway is 1,000 miles, and can take 24 hours. From Darwin to Broome is 1,152 miles, a tiring three-day drive, but you really want to take a week as there is much to see and do along the way. Greyhound Australia operates an extensive network of long-distance coaches. Although major highways usually remain open, many regional roads are closed during the wet season due to flooding.
