Fishing

Hayman Island Sportfishing. The outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, with its abundant marine life, claims some of the best fishing grounds on the planet. This could be your chance to catch tuna, sailfish, wahoo, mahimahi, Spanish mackerel, giant trevally, or, if you're really lucky, black marlin. Hayman's Marine Centre runs game and bottom fishing trips on the resort's game-fishing boat, its large deck perfect for landing the "big one." You can have your catch cleaned and cooked by Hayman’s chefs that night. Note that species vary by season, and trips are dependent on numbers and weather. If you're set on snagging a really big fish, visit September through February, when warmer waters attract larger species, including black marlin; March to August is prime time for tasty table fish. Excursions depart from Hayman Island Jetty, Raintree Ave., Hayman Island, Queensland, 4801. 07/4940–1234; hayman.oneandonlyresorts.com. From A$260 per person.
