Dunk Island

A member of the Family Islands, this 2,397-acre island is divided by a hilly spine that runs its entire length. The eastern side consists mostly of national park, with dense rain forest and secluded beaches accessible only by boat. Beautiful paths have been created through the rain forest, where you might be lucky enough to glimpse a Ulysses butterfly—a beautiful blue species with a wingspan that can reach 6 inches. Dunk is just four kilometers (2.5 miles) from Mission Beach on the mainland, so it’s easily accessible to day-trippers and short-term campers. There are several beach campsites as well as a larger group campground, as well as toilets, hot showers, and barbecue and picnic facilities near the Spit. The Jetty Cafe is open for drinks, snacks, and light meals during the day, but beyond that, you’ll have to bring your own supplies—food, plenty of drinking water, insect repellent, extra clothes, hat, sunscreen, snorkeling gear, and sturdy shoes for exploring island trails.
