$ Darlinghurst Modern Australian

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Good food and welcoming hosts pull in the crowds at this 60-seat eatery on the busy Oxford Street strip not usually know for its fine cuisine. Housed in restored early 20th-century building, Oxford Social has a straight-forward à la carte menu—main meal choices are simply deemed chicken breast, beef fillet, duck breast, and John Dory (a fish). Try to resist grazing on the mixed house nuts roasted in brown sugar soy and mild chilli at the bar before tucking into the signature starter of anrancini balls—two filled with spinach and Gorgonzola and two with pumpkin, Parmesan, and chilli (A$15). The set menu for a group of eight or more diners (an affordable A$60) has a filling five portions of starters (including prawns in garlic Pernod cream) and choice of one main dish. With A$10 happy hour cocktails and lobster specials on Tuesday nights, it's not hard to be sociable here.
