Fodor's Expert Review The Russell

143A George St., Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia

For charm, character, and central location, it's hard to beat this ornate Victorian hotel. No two rooms are the same, but all have fresh flowers, down pillows, fireplaces, and quality furnishings. Ten of the 30 rooms share bathrooms, located only a short walk along the hall. The spacious double rooms at the front have views of Circular Quay. There are also somewhat quieter standard-size double rooms overlooking Nurses Walk or opening onto an inner courtyard. Ceiling fans and windows allow for a breeze in all rooms, and the rooftop garden is a delight, especially in the evening. The downstairs restaurant and bar called The Push—it was named after a band of intellectuals who met in The Rocks during the 1960s—serves a range of craft beers, and is open for lunch and dinner.
