To escape the crowds (and tombs) for a different experience altogether, head southwest by jeep or motorbike from Hue toward the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the incredibly beautiful jungle-clad mountain borders of Laos. The scenery is mind-blowing, taking you past jungle, waterfalls, and ethnic minority villages along the way. Once you’ve hit the A Shau Valley, your options are either to head back to Hue or to make a couple of days of it by continuing south to Hoi An and including a stay in the remote Ca Tu village of Bho Hoong, where beautiful bungalows on stilts perch over a stunning river valley.
