Fodor's Expert Review Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

Greater Singapore Forest

If you like your nature a little wilder than what's found in manicured urban parks, then this is the place for you. In these 405 acres around Singapore's highest hill (535 feet), the rain forest runs riot, giving you a feel for how things might have been when tigers roamed the island. Wandering along structured, well-marked paths among towering trees, tangled vines, and prickly rattan palms, you may be startled by long-tailed macaques, squirrels, or tree shrews or, if you're really lucky, by a flying lemur. Hiking trails run through the rain forest; some lead to a hilltop with superb views. Wear good walking shoes—the trails are rocky, sometimes muddy. You can buy maps from the visitor center.
