We’ve heard of traveling to beaches of Hawaii or the rolling vineyards of Napa to tie the knot, but the nuptials of Ashley Schmeider and James Sisson took the very premise of a destination wedding to new heights. Over 18,000 feet high, to be exact.

On March 16th, after a year of training and three challenging weeks of climbing, the couple exchanged vows against the stunning, dramatic backdrop of Mt. Everest. After a braving freezing temperatures and altitude sickness, the couple, joined by photographer Charleton Churchill, arrived at base camp with just an hour-and-a-half to eat, get dressed, perform the wedding, take pictures, and then pack everything back up before a helicopter arrived to take them back down the mountain. (And you thought the logistics of trying to take all the family portraits during cocktail hour were exhausting!)

But in spite of all the difficulties and constrained timeline the couple exchanged vows in front of the Khumbu Icefall. Not to mention they did this wearing just a tuxedo and a flowy, strapless wedding gown all the while the temperature never reached higher than 5 degrees fahrenheit. Still, these truly one-of-a-kind wedding photos are proof that love conquers all (even Everest!).
