A graceful tracery of pagodas ornaments the skyline of this ancient religious center, set on the western banks of the Irrawaddy River. Salé counts no less than 50 richly bedecked monasteries, interspersed with splendid colonial-era buildings in various stages of picturesque decay, as well as the country's largest Buddha, made from the beautiful lacquered bamboo so prized throughout the country.
