Etiquette

The island resorts are very relaxed and normal beach rules apply. Swimwear is fine for the beach and for swimming (topless bathing is illegal) but a little more modest casual dress is required for dining. It’s okay at breakfast or lunch to be in beach gear (not bikinis or Speedos) but in the evening at dinner, you can dress up a bit—smart casual. If you visit Malé or other islands where normal Maldivians live, do remember that Maldives is a devoutly Muslim nation. Respect local customs and dress conservatively, especially when visiting a mosque. Women should cover their heads and shoulders and neither men nor women should wear shorts. Alcoholic drinks are available on the resort islands, but not elsewhere.
