When to Go

The best time to visit Okinawa will depend on your goals. Avoid mid-May to mid-June, which is the rainy season. The subtropical climate means the temperatures in winter rarely drop below 15°C (59°F), and because of this Okinawa celebrates the arrival of cherry blossoms in January. For marine sports including scuba diving, July to October is the best time since the water temperature is around 25°C–28°C (77°F–82°F) and the southerly breezes are not strong. Nevertheless, July to September is also typhoon season, so the fantastic weather can be interrupted by several days of heavy rains and ferocious winds.

For those interested in Okinawan culture, try to schedule your trip to coincide with one of the many festivals, such as the Shuri Castle Festival (New Year), Naha dragon-boat races (March), Eisa festivals (August), or Naha Festival & Tug of War (October).
