About the Restaurants

Indonesian cuisine is based around rice, called nasi, and noodles, often served with chicken, goat, beef, or vegetables, usually flavored with coconut milk, spices, and perhaps a chili-based sambal sauce. Warungs are the Indonesian cafés where you can enjoy local foods such as nasi goreng (Asian fried rice) at a low price; some are better than others, so look for ones with a crowd. For a step up, some of the best (and most expensive) restaurants are often found inside hotels. Vegetarians can eat very well here, particularly in Bali; tofu and tempeh can be found almost everywhere. In resort areas such as Bali, definitely book popular restaurants in advance to ensure you get a table. You'll certainly want to try fresh seafood if you're staying by the beach.
