Fodor's Expert Review Kayees Rahmathullah

$ Kochi Indian

Known for its biryani, a rice dish cooked with meat and spices, this very modest restaurant is the original, and people say it's the best, with some of the most authentic and lip-smackingly good Kerala food you will find—be ready for serious spice. There's usually a line for lunch on weekdays, and the menu may become more limited if you arrive late—they run out. A variety of biryanis is on offer, with both local and other regional specialties, such as Malabar-style, with fish, as well as vegetarian. Other notable dishes include the prawn fry, mutton fry, and fried fish curry with flaky flat bread. Be sure to wash down your meal with Kayees' special jeera water (boiled with cumin seeds), an ayurvedically approved drink that aids digestion. The restaurant is open relatively late, until about 9:45 pm. Another branch is in Ernakulam (P484–235–4321); it's air-conditioned, but the one in Mattancherry is easier to get to.
