Stood on Pennington Street in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay, Hotel Pennington is a modern boutique hotel that pays particular attention to its stylish rooms. Small by Hong Kong standards with a mere 79 rooms, the hotel is a hit with business and leisure guests who appreciate the excellent central location and its terrace bar.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Rare for a Hong Kong hotel, the Hotel Pennington can host guests and their pets.
Rooms come in six types with the four-person family room representing the largest offering. The design remains uniform throughout the rooms with swathes of wood paneling providing a cozy, cocoon for guests. Lightboxes above the beds cast a mellow glow over the rooms that sets a soothing tone.
Every room at the Hotel Pennington comes with a handy smart phone for navigating the city.
Sliding frosted glass doors separate the bathrooms, which are decorated in sleek dark, tiles and come with walk-in rainforest showers.
Flat-screen TVs, design magazines and a small lobby bar create a relaxing entrance to the hotel. Guests can also make use of the outside Open Terrace Whisky Bar and its cluster of seats overlooking the crammed city block.
Guests can choose between Cantonese or Western cooked breakfast in the morning. Dining options are limited to breakfast.
Adjoining the lobby, the Open Terrace Whisky Bar has a strong selection of labels for the keen whisky drinker.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Rather than sophisticated cigar smokers, the terrace seems mostly to appeal to regular smokers.
Located to the south of Times Square and the heart of Causeway Bay, the hotel is slightly removed from the busiest part of the neighborhood. Still, it’s only 10 minutes from Times Square and within walking distance of Happy Valley Racecourse should you feel like having a flutter on a horse. Causeway Bay MTR is a four-minute walk.
Guests shouldn’t be too concerned with the lack of dining options at the hotel because Causeway Bay is full of great restaurants. Din Tai Fung (1-minute walk) for amazing Taiwanese food, Ho Hung Kee (5-minute walk) for noodles and San Xi Lou (14-minute walk) for classic Chinese are all great choices.
Drink Aperol Spritz at the warm, rustic Italian restaurant and bar, EAT.it (10-minute walk) or try Strokes (8-minute walk) for fruity cocktails and the bar’s fluorescent mini-golf course.
WHY WE LIKE IT
This great boutique hotel has plenty to admire about it from the stylish rooms to the perfect location. It primarily appeals to a business clientele but the proximity to the shops, restaurants and bars of Causeway Bay should be an appealing factor for those travelling for leisure.
