Fodor's Expert Review Empire Hotel Hong Kong, Causeway Bay

8 Wing Hing St., Hong Kong, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong See on Map

It may not be reinventing the wheel but the Empire Hotel Hong Kong Causeway Bay creates a comfortable, value for money stay for guests in town for business or leisure. Located at the quieter end of Causeway Bay, the hotel is well positioned with one of the city’s rare green spots, Victoria Park, a stone’s throw away.

Rooms are cozy but benefit from floor to ceiling windows to create an illusion of space. A range of rooms at different price points offer an extra small sliver of space that may or may not be worth the money, depending on how much you need an extra few feet.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The design is rather bland, with a slightly cold, corporate feel to some rooms.

Partitioned behind frosted glass, bathrooms come with rainforest showers.

Bear in mind the in-room feel of the frosted glass bathrooms.

Given the simplicity of the rooms, the design of the impressive lobby comes as a surprise. Clean lines and chic materials create a smart first impression of the hotel.

The in-house restaurant plays to the crowd and offers buffet dining from breakfast through dinner. Yes, there is also an a la carte menu but… buffet.

Getting Around

Being a largely residential area means that this area of the city close to North Point and Fortress Hill can feel much quieter than Causeway Bay proper. If you explore the area, take in Victoria Park before making longer journeys from Tin Hau MTR, which is a five-minute walk from the hotel.

Once you tire of the hotel buffet, go looking for Hong Kong staples. First off, try the noodles and beef brisket at the cheap and cheerful Sister Wah (5-minute walk) on Electric Road. You’ll find plenty of good Korean food in Tin Hau, with BBQ 7080 (3-minute walk) a solid place to start.

Sample the cocktails on the terrace at Bond Bar and Restaurant (13-minute walk), a trendy spot off Tung Lo Wan Road or head for Drunkerland (4-minute walk), a regular neighborhood bar with a huge craft beer list.

Though the hotel might not be the most exciting, we can’t fault the service, comfort or location, which makes the Empire Hotel Hong Kong, Causeway Bay a great affordable option.
