Tunisia is a treasure trove of crafts of all kinds and price ranges. Handmade carpets make beautiful souvenirs, and blankets and wall-hangings can be found everywhere. Ceramics come in all shapes and colors, from oil jars to bowls to jugs. Olive wood is used for practical items such as salad bowls, but you will find lovely olive-wood boxes inlaid with nacre (mother-of-pearl). Traditional Arab work in brass and copper produces ornate vases and water pots, trays, and small tables. More valuable items are formed from silver and enamels, while gold jewelry is generally a good value in Tunisia. Leather goods include clothing, bags, and gilt-embossed items; leather slippers with turned up toes make a fun and inexpensive souvenir. The Berbers have particular specialties, including glass beads, as well as the "hand of Fatima" or fish symbols used to ward off the evil eye.
An institution in Tunis, Tunisian designer Samia Bin Khalifa has been creating fashions for stylish ladies since the '60s. Pick up one of her flowing, embellished robes or pants, based on traditional Tunisian styles, in soft, colorful fabrics and flattering designs.
