Fodor's Expert Review Sharook Riviera Grand Lodge

Wete, Pemba Island, Tanzania

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Thank goodness for Mr. Sharook and his Grandly named lodge, not to be confused with Sharook Guest House (the same owner) around the corner. He provides one of Pemba Island's few, quality budget accommodations. Basic and slightly dated room amenities are made up for by a lodge with plenty of heart. Be sure to take advantage of the rooftop terrace with wonderful views over the bay as well as the nightly displays of the famous and endangered flying foxes—a highlight and not to be missed. Apparently chef Kassim's Spanish omelets are gaining quite a reputation as some of the best around so do give them a try. There are dorm rooms if you are traveling in a big group.

PROS

  • accommodating and friendly staff

CONS

  • no diving or seaside lodging on-site and all activities have to be arranged outside of the lodge, but they can be arranged with help from the staff
