Fodor's Expert Review Kervan Saray Beach Lodge

Makangale Village, Tanzania

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Set in a remote section of Northern Pemba, and surrounded by jungle gardens this is a place where you come to be, quite literally, off the grid. Also know as Travellers Rest House it does not have state supplied power as they are too far from the line but when you see the views over the ocean from their deck area you will want to let it all go and just enjoy being in solitude. Simple, rustic refurbished rooms and semi enclosed outdoor bath and shower this is more of a permanent safari camp with a very big focus on getting into the water and spending your days diving below the surface.

If you are the kind of person that is jumpy when it comes nature the semi-open bathrooms might not be for you.

PROS

  • A bed in the bunk rooms is a good budget option at only $50 pp, if you are overhanding and want to visit Pemba they can help arrange a safe place to store your car
  • peace corps volunteers, VSO volunteers, KOIKA, JAICA and all others are offered special rates

CONS

  • water in the showers can be cold on days where sunlight is limited, because of it’s remote location electricity is limited and the fans are not operational all day
  • no Wi-Fi and very slow internet connection via a computer
  • drinks are extra
