Fodor's Expert Review Paddagang

Though built as a private residence in 1809, by 1821 Paddagang (Frog's Way) was already serving as one of South Africa's first tap houses (like a pub with wine on tap). Immaculately restored after the 1969 earthquake, it was turned into a restaurant and became a popular tourist destination. Although a little timeworn, the decor is authentic, as are the riempie (thong-upholstered) chairs. The vine-covered pergola makes a lovely place to eat in all but the hottest weather. Traditional Cape fare is your best bet here, from starters like smoorsnoek (local smoked fish braised with potato and onion) with grape jam on the side, to a main course of South Africa's national dish, bobotie. Though the establishment has much going for it, standards of both food and service aren't what they used to be. However, it remains popular with locals and visitors alike.
