Fodor's Expert Review Oude Leeskamer

182 Dorp St., Stellenbosch, Western Cape, 7600, South Africa

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

In the heart of historic Stellenbosch, the "Old Reading Room" (literal translation of the name) is a small guest house with a big heart. The historic house, which was Stellenbosch's first library, still retains its original yellowwood floors and ceiling, and huge fireplace. Five lovely rooms, each with its own small balcony or terrace looking onto a shared courtyard, are comfortable and enjoy extras like flat screen TVs and international sockets. The owner-managers are incredibly friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the area's history. Breakfast is delicious; you'll likly wake up to the smell of baking muffins. At this writing, plans for expansion mean an additional eight rooms are expected by 2012.
