Fodor's Expert Review Mardouw Country House

R60, between Ashton and Swellendam, Swellendam, Western Cape, South Africa

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

The old Cape Georgian farmhouse on this working wine-and-olive farm has been beautifully converted into a luxury guesthouse with stunning views of the Langeberg mountains. Among the amenities are an infinity pool, wide verandas, under-floor heating, and an attentive staff. Clean, contemporary lines decorate the tasteful rooms. The estate produces its own Pinotage and chenin blanc, which you can enjoy at Mardouw's sumptuous three-course dinners. The country house has its own herb-and-vegetable garden, so the emphasis is on fresh, seasonal food. The menu changes daily but might include a prawn starter and a main course of succulent beef medallions served with beetroot couscous and fresh ribbon vegetables. The chef's olive ice cream is a favorite on the dessert menu, and the cheese platter includes cheeses from a neighboring farm together with homemade preserves—figs in syrup, tomato jam, and marrow marmalade. Special arrangements must be made in advance for children.
