Fodor's Expert Review Grande Roche
Plantasie Str., Paarl, Western Cape, 7622, South Africa Fodor's Choice
Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World Collection, this establishment can stake a claim to being one of the best hotels in South Africa. In a gorgeous Cape Dutch manor house that dates from the mid-18th century, the hotel sits amid acres of vines beneath Paarl Rock, overlooking the valley and the Drakenstein Mountains. Suites are either in the historic buildings—slave quarters, stables, and wine cellar—or in attractive terrace buildings constructed in traditional Cape Dutch style. Rooms are a tasteful mix of the modern and the old: reed ceilings and thatch comfortably coexist with heated towel racks and air-conditioning. Offering a level of service extremely rare in South Africa, the employees, many of whom trained in Europe, outnumber the guests by two to one. The fine-dining restaurant is considered one of the best in South Africa. Michelin-trained executive chef Roland Gorgosilich creates international cuisine with finesse, and you can complement your meal with wine from the (very) extensive wine list.
